Government’s Response to Margaret Nduta Case

The Kenyan government has officially responded to the growing public outcry over the death sentence handed to Margaret Nduta Macharia in Vietnam for drug trafficking.

Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary (PS) Korir Sing’oei has assured Kenyans that the government is making every possible effort to secure clemency for Nduta. This marks the first formal statement from the government amid increasing calls for diplomatic intervention.

“Nduta’s case is complex and challenging, but we are doing everything within our means to secure reprieve for our national,” Sing’oei stated in a post.

PS Korir revealed that he had a telephone conversation with H.E. Nguyen Minh Hang, Vietnam’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, to discuss the case. He conveyed the anxiety of Kenyans over Nduta’s impending execution and reiterated President William Ruto’s administration’s request for a stay of execution to explore alternative solutions.

“I had a telephone conversation this afternoon with my counterpart, H.E. Nguyen Minh Hang, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Vietnam, regarding Margaret Nduta’s case. I conveyed to Madam Hang the anxiety of the Kenyan people over the planned execution and reiterated our request for a stay of execution to allow our two countries to find a resolution. I am grateful for Madam Hang’s assurance that our petition is under consideration by her country’s authorities. In the meantime, our Mission in Bangkok is actively monitoring the case,” Sing’oei stated.

The government’s intervention comes as pressure mounts from human rights groups and the public, urging diplomatic efforts to prevent Nduta’s execution.
