President Ruto’s Condolence Message and Vow for Justice

President William Samoei Ruto issued a heartfelt message, mourning Father Bett and promising swift justice:

“Our condolences to the church, the faithful of St. Matthias Mulumba Tot Parish, Diocese of Eldoret, for the loss of Father Allois Cheruiyot Bett.
Fr. Allois was a tireless promoter of peace and a true faith leader whose sermons were genuine, clear and targeted.
May God grant the family and friends strength to bear this painful death.
We will hunt down his killers as we commit to restore peace in the Kerio Valley.”

Escalating Insecurity in Kerio Valley

Despite increased security efforts—including the deployment of Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicles and a disarmament campaign led by Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen—Kerio Valley remains volatile. The assassination of Father Bett has sparked renewed concern over the safety of residents.

In response to the tragedy, Tot High School has been shut down indefinitely as fear and tension grip the community.

Investigation and Arrests

The National Police Service swiftly launched investigations into the priest’s murder. At least six suspects were arrested following a massive security operation. Authorities believe the killing was premeditated and not linked to cattle rustling, raising further concern about targeted violence against peace advocates.

Father Bett’s Legacy and Impact

Father Bett was known for his unwavering commitment to peacebuilding, especially among warring communities in Kerio Valley. He often spoke at interfaith and interdenominational events promoting unity and reconciliation.

His death has deeply affected the Catholic Diocese of Eldoret, with fellow clergy and congregants expressing shock and demanding justice. His final public speech during a service attended by President Ruto showcased his vision for peace and community healing.
