Spain is looking for 10,000 volunteers to drink wine every day

Spain is making headlines with a new health initiative that’s turning heads across Europe. In an effort to better understand how alcohol impacts long-term health, the country is set to launch the world’s largest clinical study focused on wine consumption, and they’re looking for 10,000 volunteers who drink wine in moderation.

The study is being coordinated by the University of Navarra’s Alumni Trialist Initiative (UNATI) and will kick off before June 2025. Over 500 doctors across Spain will be involved in tracking participants’ health over the next four years.

What’s in It for Participants?

This isn’t just any research project. Participants will receive free personalized healthcare, including:

  • Regular medical checkups

  • Mental and cognitive health assessments

  • Lifestyle and nutrition guidance tailored to their needs

It’s a win-win: volunteers contribute to science while benefiting from premium health support.

Why Spain, and Why Now?

Spain has always had a strong wine culture, but times are changing. Wine consumption is dropping, especially among younger people who are more focused on healthy lifestyles. At the same time, climate issues like prolonged droughts affect grape production and push wine prices up.

This study comes at a critical time when the country needs real data to inform both public health policy and the future of its wine industry.

Who Can Join?

The trial is open to light or moderate wine drinkers across Spain. If you’re based in regions like Galicia or anywhere else in the country and enjoy a glass now and then, you could be eligible.

Eligible volunteers include:

  • Men aged 50–70

  • Women aged 55–75

  • Individuals who drink at least 3 servings of alcohol per week

If you fit the criteria and are based in Spain, you could be part of this groundbreaking health trial.

How to Sign Up

Interested individuals can register through participating healthcare centers or the UNATI platform. The study is expected to shape global conversations around wine, wellness, and responsible drinking.
