Samoei Boys Student Dies After Lightning Strike During Rugby Training

The community of Nandihills town in Nandi County is reeling from shock and sorrow following the tragic death of a Form Four student at Samoei Boys Secondary School. The 17-year-old boy lost his life after being struck by lightning while participating in a rugby training session.

The fatal incident occurred in the evening as the school’s rugby team was training ahead of a friendly match scheduled for the next day. Witnesses report that lightning suddenly struck the young player during the session, fatally injuring him on the spot.

Confirming the incident, Nandi East Sub-county Police Commander Leariwallah Jeremiah expressed his condolences to the school and the bereaved family.

“Yes, it is true we lost the student instantly during practice. The lightning hit him from the head down his back, even tearing his clothes. It was a very painful and sudden death. We extend our deepest sympathies to his parents and the entire school community,” said Mr. Jeremiah.

The student’s body was transferred to the Nandihills County Hospital Mortuary. He has been identified as a resident of Kapkolei in Aldai Constituency, Nandi County.

The unexpected tragedy has cast a dark cloud over the school, with fellow students, teachers, and parents mourning the untimely loss. The school is expected to provide counseling and support services to help students cope with the trauma.

This incident also raises awareness about the dangers of outdoor activities during stormy weather, especially in areas prone to lightning strikes. Schools and sports institutions are being urged to implement weather monitoring systems and reinforce safety protocols during training and games.
