KMA is inviting applications from suitably qualified candidates for the following positions:

1️⃣ Director, Maritime Education, Training & Labour (1 Post)

Role:

  • Lead the development and implementation of national frameworks on maritime education, training, and seafarer welfare in line with the Merchant Shipping Act and international conventions (STCW, MLC, SOLAS).

  • Liaise with global maritime organizations (IMO, ILO).

  • Oversee issuance of seafarer certificates, monitor training institutions, conduct audits, and manage the Kenyan Seafarers Register.

  • Guide on seafarer engagement, welfare, and complaint handling.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s in Nautical Science, Marine Engineering, or related maritime field.

  • Class II/2 or III/2 Certificate of Competency.

  • 10+ years relevant experience.

  • Strategic Leadership Course.

  • Membership in a recognized professional body (in good standing).

  • Excellent communication and computer skills.


2️⃣ Assistant Director, Training & Certification (Nautical) (1 Post)

Role:

  • Supervise seafarer certification, examinations, assessments, and approvals for training institutions.

  • Implement Quality Standards System for seafarer training.

  • Review and update Training & Certification regulations.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s in Nautical Science, Marine Studies, or related.

  • Class II/2 Certificate of Competency (STCW).

  • 3+ years experience in maritime training/certification.

  • Leadership and governance knowledge.

  • Proficiency in computer applications.


3️⃣ Assistant Director, Registration of Ships, Inspection & Surveys (1 Post)

Role:

  • Manage the Kenya Ship Register.

  • Ensure safety compliance for Kenyan and foreign-flagged vessels.

  • Implement Tonnage Convention, Load Line, and Ship Safety regulations.

  • Supervise Recognized Organizations conducting surveys.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s in Nautical Science, Marine Engineering, or related field.

  • Class II/2 or III/2 Certificate of Competency.

  • 3+ years’ experience in ship inspections, compliance, and safety standards.


4️⃣ Port State Control Officer (1 Post)

Role:

  • Inspect foreign ships for compliance with SOLAS, MARPOL, ISM, ISPS.

  • Enforce maritime safety, environmental protection, and security codes.

  • Work under the Indian Ocean MoU on Port State Control.

  • Conduct evaluations on ship safety equipment, machinery, and hull structures.

Requirements:

  • Master Mariner or Chief Engineer Certificate (for ships ≥1,600 GT or ≥3,000 KW).

  • Or, Naval Architect/Marine Engineer with 5+ years’ experience.

  • Port & Flag State Control Training Certificate.

  • Strong leadership and communication skills.


5️⃣ Principal Accountant (1 Post)

Role:

  • Manage KMA’s financial operations, budgeting, reporting, and compliance.

  • Oversee cash flows, audits, statutory deductions, and preparation of financial statements.

  • Provide financial insights for decision-making.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s in Commerce (Accounting/Finance), CPA (K) or ACCA.

  • ICPAK membership (or equivalent).

  • 3+ years’ financial management experience.

  • Proficient in accounting software and financial systems.


6️⃣ Principal Ship Surveyor (2 Posts)

Role:

  • Supervise ship inspections for safety, compliance, and environmental protection.

  • Implement international maritime conventions (SOLAS, MARPOL, ISM).

  • Manage inspections of small vessels and oversee Recognized Organizations.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s in Maritime field (Nautical Science, Marine Engineering, etc.).

  • Class II/2 Certificate (Chief Officer/Second Engineer).

  • 3+ years’ ship surveyor experience.

  • Membership in a professional body.


7️⃣ Principal Maritime Security Officer (1 Post)

Role:

  • Conduct risk assessments for ships and ports.

  • Implement ISPS Code and maritime security frameworks.

  • Approve and audit Ship Security Plans, Port Facility Security Plans, and cargo handling facilities.

  • Maintain the Piracy Reporting and Information Sharing Centre.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s in Maritime field.

  • Deck or Engineer Officer Certificate (STCW).

  • 3+ years’ maritime security experience.

  • ISPS Code proficiency.

  • Membership in a maritime professional body.

    8. Director, Maritime Education, Training & Labour – 1 Post

    • Grade: KMAG 2

    • Terms: Contract

    • Salary:

      • Basic: Ksh. 245,500 – 449,500

      • House Allowance: Ksh. 70,000

      • Commuter Allowance: Ksh. 24,000

    • Job Purpose:

      • Lead implementation of maritime education, training, and labour policies under the Merchant Shipping Act, KMA Act, and International Conventions (STCW, MLC, SOLAS).

      • Oversee maritime education in Kenya, ensure compliance with IMO & ILO standards, manage seafarer certification, welfare, and training standards.

    • Qualifications:

      • Bachelor’s in Nautical Science, Marine Engineering, or related field (Master’s is an advantage).

      • Certificate of Competency (Class II/2 or III/2 – STCW 1978, as amended).

      • At least 10 years of relevant experience.


    9. Assistant Director, Training & Certification (Nautical) – 1 Post

    • Grade: KMAG 3

    • Terms: Pensionable

    • Salary:

      • Basic: Ksh. 170,500 – 373,500

      • House Allowance: Ksh. 35,000

      • Commuter Allowance: Ksh. 20,000

    • Job Purpose:

      • Approve and monitor seafarer training programs in compliance with the STCW Convention.

    • Qualifications:

      • Bachelor’s in Nautical Science or related maritime field.

      • Certificate of Competency (Class II/2 – STCW).

      • Minimum 3 years of experience in maritime training or certification.


    10. Assistant Director, Registration of Ships, Inspection & Surveys – 1 Post

    • Grade: KMAG 3

    • Job Purpose:

      • Manage ship registration, conduct inspections, and ensure compliance with maritime safety regulations (SOLAS, MARPOL, Load Line).

    • Qualifications:

      • Bachelor’s in Marine Engineering, Nautical Science, or related field.

      • Certificate of Competency (Class II/2 or III/2 – STCW).

      • Minimum 3 years of experience in ship inspections and maritime safety.


    11. Port State Control Officer – 1 Post

    • Grade: KMAG 3

    • Job Purpose:

      • Conduct Port State Control (PSC) inspections under the Indian Ocean MOU to ensure safety and environmental compliance of foreign-flagged ships.

    • Qualifications:

      • Certificate of Competency (Master or Chief Engineer – STCW).

      • Port State Control Inspection training certificate.


    12. Principal Accountant – 1 Post

    • Grade: KMAG 4

    • Salary:

      • Basic: Ksh. 115,500 – 285,500

      • House Allowance: Ksh. 30,000

      • Commuter Allowance: Ksh. 16,000

    • Job Purpose:

      • Oversee financial operations, budgeting, reporting, and compliance at KMA.

    • Qualifications:

      • Bachelor’s in Finance, Accounting, or related field.

      • CPA (K) or ACCA certification.

      • Minimum 3 years of accounting/finance experience.
