Kaplong Girls High School Closed After Sexual Harassment Claims Spark Student Protest

Kaplong Girls High School in Bomet County, Kenya, has been closed indefinitely after students staged a protest over alleged sexual harassment by a male teacher. The incident has caused an uproar among parents, alumni, and the general public, prompting urgent calls for accountability.

The protest disrupted normal learning activities at the school, leading to property destruction and heightened tension. Students reportedly accused the teacher of making sexually suggestive comments, sending explicit messages, and luring them to his office.

“We have temporarily closed the school to restore calm and enable investigations to proceed,” said Principal Claire Mitei.

During the unrest, students vandalized school property, including classroom and dormitory windows. The school bus was also damaged after being hit with stones.

🔎 Allegations Under Investigation

While the claims remain unverified, preliminary reports suggest the male teacher engaged in inappropriate behavior toward several students. Security officers and education officials have been deployed to manage the situation and ensure the safety of learners.

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) is expected to intervene following rising pressure from education stakeholders.

🧠 National Attention on Sexual Misconduct in Schools

This incident follows a similar case involving Alliance Girls High School, where the TSC recently sent a teacher on 30-day compulsory leave due to sexual misconduct allegations. The move came after an exposé by Africa Uncensored titled The Teacher and the System, which uncovered two decades of abuse in Kenyan schools.

TSC CEO Evaleen Mitei confirmed that the accused teacher at Alliance Girls violated the Code of Regulations for Teachers (CORT) and the Teachers Service Commission Act.
