Former Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga has passed away in India at the age of 80. According to a report by Mathrubhumi.com, an Indian news outlet, Raila collapsed during a morning walk at around 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday within the premises of an Ayurvedic facility in Kochi.

Medical personnel at the scene reportedly administered CPR before rushing him to Devamatha Hospital in Koothattukulam, where he was pronounced dead at approximately 9:52 a.m. (Indian time). The hospital’s spokesperson later confirmed the tragic news.

Raila had been undergoing Ayurvedic treatment in Kochi for rest and recovery after suffering a mild stroke in Kenya. The facility is the same one that had previously treated his daughter, Rosemary Odinga, helping her regain her eyesight.

A police officer in India told the foreign press that Raila’s death had been formally reported to the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) for the necessary diplomatic and procedural arrangements.

Meanwhile, Kenya remains on edge as the nation awaits an official address from President William Ruto regarding the passing of the veteran opposition leader.

Recent Health Concerns

In recent months, Raila had experienced episodes of ill health that prompted his travel to India for treatment. His elder brother, Senator Oburu Odinga, had earlier confirmed that Raila was recuperating well, dismissing rumors that suggested his condition was critical.

“I want to tell you that Raila is up and about. Just like any other human being, he was indisposed a little and is now recuperating and resting,” Oburu had said in a previous statement.

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) also refuted circulating reports about Raila’s health, accusing political rivals of spreading false information to undermine his leadership and influence. Both the party and the Odinga family had maintained privacy around his health, emphasizing that despite his age and health challenges, Raila remained deeply committed to his vision for national unity and democracy.

A Legacy That Endures

As tributes pour in from across the world, Raila Odinga is being remembered not only as a statesman and reformist but also as a symbol of resilience, hope, and transformation. His decades-long struggle for democracy, justice, and good governance have left an indelible mark on Kenya’s political landscape.

Despite his recurring health challenges—including a brain fluid drainage procedure in Dubai and minor back surgery in previous years—Raila’s political journey has remained a testament to endurance and purpose.

Raila Odinga’s passing marks the end of an era in Kenyan politics, but his legacy will continue to inspire generations to come.
