Eldoret City Manager Tito Koiyet Locked Out of Office for Two Months Amid Leadership Dispute
Eldoret, Kenya – June 9, 2025
The City Manager of Eldoret, Tito Koiyet, has been locked out of his office for over two months, following an alleged assault incident and leadership dispute that has rocked the Uasin Gishu County administration.
City Manager Finds Locks Changed After Leave
Koiyet returned from official leave only to discover that the locks to his office at the Eldoret West Social Hall had been changed. His keys no longer granted access, and his accounting officer privileges were revoked, despite an active court order protecting his position.
Legal Battle Over City Manager’s Position
The conflict stems from ongoing leadership wrangles that began shortly after Eldoret was elevated to city status in 2023. Koiyet filed a petition in the Employment and Labour Relations Court, challenging efforts by some senior county officials to unlawfully remove him from office.
The court had issued an order restraining any interference with his employment pending the hearing. However, Koiyet alleges that the revocation of his duties is a direct violation of the court directive.
Protest and Plans for Contempt of Court Proceedings
In response, the embattled city boss protested outside his office and announced plans to pursue contempt of court charges against county officials. He maintains that the court ruling gives him full rights to remain in office until the legal process is complete.
Violent Attack at Eldoret West Social Hall
Tensions escalated in February when a group of unidentified youths stormed the City Manager’s office, violently assaulting Koiyet and a female police officer. Both sustained injuries during the incident. Police investigations are ongoing to identify and arrest the attackers.
Operations Disrupted as Leadership Crisis Drags On
The leadership vacuum has caused significant operational disruptions at the Eldoret City Manager’s office, now entering its third month. Residents and stakeholders have expressed growing concerns over the impact on city services and governance.
County Secretary Yet to Comment
Efforts to get a comment from Uasin Gishu County Secretary Phillip Melly were unsuccessful, as he was reportedly in a meeting at the time of inquiry.
