OCS Arrested as Investigation Into Death of Influencer Albert Ojwang Intensifies

In a major breakthrough in the ongoing investigation into the death of Albert Ojwang, the Officer Commanding Station (OCS) at Central Police Station, Samson Talam, has been arrested.

IPOA Commissioner Boniface Samati confirmed on Monday that Ojwang died inside a police cell at the Central Police Station in Nairobi, contrary to earlier reports that lacked clarity on the cause and location of death. The arrest of OCS Talam marks a critical turning point in the search for justice.

OCS Talam was apprehended in Eldoret and later transferred to IPOA headquarters in Nairobi for further questioning. His lawyer, Felix Kiprono, confirmed the arrest and noted that the officer is cooperating with investigators.

Albert Ojwang Death in Police Custody Sparks National Outrage

Ojwang, a well-known Kenyan influencer and teacher, was arrested in Homa Bay County on June 7, 2025, allegedly over a defamatory social media post targeting Deputy Inspector General Eliud Lagat. He was transported to Nairobi and booked at Central Police Station, where he was later found unresponsive in his cell.

He was rushed to Mbagathi Hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival.

The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) quickly launched a probe, dispatching investigators to the scene. IPOA Chair Ahmed Issack Hassan visited the station and pledged a transparent and thorough investigation.

The arrest of a high-ranking police officer has amplified calls for accountability in the National Police Service. Civil society groups, politicians, and everyday Kenyans continue to demand justice for Ojwang, describing his death as part of a disturbing pattern of police brutality in Kenya.
